1. Start with a latch hook kit which should include your yarn, design grid, and perhaps even your hook. If not you’ll need to buy a latch hook.
2. Find the instruction sheet in your kit. It will tell you which colors you need to use in which areas.
3. Grab the latch hook with your hand with the latch side pointing up.
4. With your other hand wrap the string around the shank, even out the ends and hold.
5. Put the top of the latch hook into one grid hole and out the hole that’s directly above it.
6. Make sure the latch is open and take ends to the right side of latch holding it with the string going in between the hook and latch
7. Pull the latch hook back through the hole. The latch will close around the string and form a knot.
8. Pull on the ends to tighten the knot.
9. Work in rows going from left to right and starting in the bottom left corner. Don’t skip around.

Sometimes there is some confusion about the difference between rug hooking and latch hooking. Rug hooking uses a continuous piece of yarn to create rugs, creating a tightly woven highly durable finished product that looks a lot like Berber. Latching hook on the other hand creates rugs from pre-cut strips of yarn and uses a latch hook tool. Both are popular and produce a nice finished product.
